Portable Library

I've been wanting to make a portable library:  some sort of cage or box that I could carry hands-free, and that would safely contain a few small books.

So, off to Hobby Lobby, to size up my options.  The tentative plan was to begin with a display case, embellish it with some fretwork, and replace the base with a fancy hinged lid.  But, Hobby  Lobby also has numerous strange decorative boxes.

What I found was a metal-frame box, with sides composed entirely of metal loops.  It happens to be just the right size to hold the books.  And, a thin belt can be threaded through the loops, allowing me to sling it around my waist and wear it at the side or back.  It's a little heavy when completely full - I could thread in a second belt for over the shoulder - but it's entirely serviceable as-is.  $15 and done - I can work with that.

I also found a small case with handle, that I intend to use as a purse.  Really cool latch, nice backstopped hinges, and it fits perfectly on top of the portable library.  Another $15.

Cheap mock-antiques.  Now I shall travel in true ersatz style.

It's worth running a strap around that box. Those pretty hook latches have been known to work themselves open when you're walking about, and BOOM, everything dropped.

Yeah the latch is definitely a weak point. It does have a padlock loop, though; I'll plan to slip something through there.

Oh wait, you meant the other box. I stared at that latch for a long time before deciding it was probably mostly going to be okay. I think I will run a strap of some kind around it. Thanks for the warning.

I love how it makes the books look dangerous, like they need to be caged!
