Steampunk Icarus Costume (finally)

I'd been planning this as my Halloween costume since this summer. It ended up becoming part of a group costume with the theme "Genre Twists on Famous People" which included: Goth Betsy Ross, Hippie Julius Caesar, SciFi Saint George (whose ray gun mod I already posted about here), and Disney Princess Nietzche.

The wings were constructed using this Instructibles tutorial which was pretty easy to follow, especially with the help of the woodshop manager at my college. If you're crafty enough to have a jigsaw etc at home, I'm sure you can build them yourself. I haven't used powertools since stage crew in high school, so I needed some guidance.

I made a fairly substantial mod to the basic harness structure, since I didn't have a backpack to cut up. I just cut out the lightest back piece I could and slotted metal bars in on the side to hang the wings on. I'm glad to answer any questions about construction.

The dress is from Clockwork Couture, natch. This is one of their turned-out-to-use-actual-leather rejects. I've never had a prettier dress, so I certainly hope they bring the design back for everyone. Heels were picked up at Discount Shoe Warehouse, so all I know is that the brand is Chinese Laundry. Goggles from Restoration Hardware. And now: photos:
