When you haven't any pockets

A question for the ladies who like to wear corsets and skirts...

When you aren't wearing pants and are pocketless, how do you go about carrying things such as money or your phone or camera with you? I have a few basic ideas, but curious to see what other people have come up with to use in the past. Thanks!

No matter what style of club I go to, I always wear my combat boots with long socks underneith, usually with floral or fishnets stockings.

Everything fits either in the bust of my corset or bodysuit (I tend to hide money in the "boobs" of whatever I'm wearing...)

Money, creditcards, insurance cards, cell phone, etc all go into the socks.

I tie my keys into the lacing of the boots.

One would have to dig deep to get to my stash and I certainly wouldn't have anyone digging into my "boobs"...unless it's my husband and even then, he knows it's an iffy proposition.

Hope this helps!

well, i have a couple of different belt pouches, purses, and various other external pockety-things.

my fav is a black belt with a built in pocket on the side just the right size for my id, a credit card, and my cell phone.

on the whole tho, i just use purse-type things

a simple coinpurse that wraps around your waist/hips tends to work perfectly for that sort of thing. Or a similar contraption that cinches to your wrist.

Maybe it would help if I specify more what I'm wearing. I'm wearing an underbust corset with a camisole and full skirt. Otherwise I'd totally stuff everything in the bust of my corset. That's what I do at the ren faire. Tight-fitting bodices are great for that. :)

if you are wearing a full skirt you could wear actual pockets. I've found that under full skirts you can stuff them and it's barely noticeable

One thought could be what women used to do years ago - one idea is to tie a pouch under your skirt and pur belongings in it. (Granted, not easy to access, but often there would be a slit in the skirt to allow your hand through to get into the pouch.)

I also find myself tucking important things into the bust. You can carry a surprising amount of stuff in a bra. (Those push-up bras with the removable pads create pockets of sorts, and I've been able to tuck a credit card, ID and an ounce of a contraband substance in.)

The slit-and pouch was useful for foiling thieves, and eventually evolved into the pocket.

I always wear belt-pouches, because I am a lowly A-cup and nothing fits in my bra.

I sew pockets into my skirts and into the bosom of corsets I make myself; corset-bosom pockets don't give you a lot of space, but I usually eke out enough room for my phone, ID and a bit of cash (a 3x3 pocket's plenty big enough for this, and it doesn't have to be very deep). Failing that, I carry a purse, or more often just make my boyfriend carry everything. He's a man. Men get pockets. The wages of pockets are carrying stuff for girls with none.

I tend to sew nice big pockets into my skirts
And, I almost always make a matching reticule (purse) for my outfits.

Wait....you don't make your girlfriend/boyfriend in cargo pants carry it all?

I like this!

Seriously, good suggestions, I may steal a few despite my penchant for pockets.

If I'm dressed in semi-formal style, I carry a reticule.

If I'm going for more of the sky pirate look, I have a utility pouch and an equipment bag.

I'm certainly glad I'm not going to be the first one to say "in my boobs." Corsetry does wonders.

Sewing invisible pockets into a skirt is very, very simple, but that doesn't really answer your question.

Belts: the Wild Cards belts come with all kinds of customizable pouches, which I am quite fond of. A belt with pouches on it also looks great with a corseted waist because it makes the hips look wider and the waist look smaller.

Holster: Wild Cards and Skin Graft both make cute little holster bags in leather and canvas. They have enough room to carry a cell phone, wallet, and cash, but probably not enough room for a camera. This is an excellent alternative if you don't want to add more bulk around your hips.

Garter: I recently purchased a garter with a built-in pocket for a small hip flask. For some reason, these are often marketed at brides. The ones in the link are not especially attractive in my opinion, but they are provided for illustrative purposes. Not only does the garter look saucy and provide me with a stash of extra booze, but there's also enough room in the pocket for me to keep my money in there.

This stuff is on the expensive side, but hopefully it is inspirational.

This made me laugh, because I'm sure I've been to a few weddings where the bride probably wished she was carrying a flask in her garter.

typically, i carry a purse...humongous heavy handbag filled with everything i could possibly need, ever, during the week, and smaller, lighter shoulder bag filled with a more streamlined version of the contents for weekends. if i'm not being too lazy to compact even more, i recently was gifted with a cute little belt with a wallet-sized pouch on it, recycled from a necktie. i also desperately want some spiffy little utility belts, as there's a couple of essential items that i carry (such as asthema medication...and, er, nintendo ds) that are too bulky to easily fit into my socks, bra, etc. fabric horse has some adorable ones, but i haven't seen any irl.

Yeah, I *have* to carry a purse because of my asthma meds. If I am making an outfit I often make a reticule sort of thing; otherwise, for steampunk purposes or when I expect to be dancing with nowhere to put my bag down safely, I have a little black canvas military surplus bag with a winged-parachute patch on it I can wear with the strap diagonally across my body.

I want a utility belt/hip pouch sort of thing too. But I wouldn't wear Fabric Horse's because I dislike the materials they favor (and don't think they'd work well with steampunk ensembles). Definitely has to be leather or canvas, not cordura-and-seatbelts-and-reflective-tape.

If you wear gloves that go up your arms, you can tuck (slim) things like credit cards into the top of them, like you would with a sock.
A Victorian solution would be a reticule, a little bag you hang from your wrist (or you can tie it from a d ring under your skirts, as others have suggested. I am new to Steampunk (though v. experienced rennie/medieval costume) and I have a small metal "business card case" for my money and cards, that is slim enough to be tucked into a boot or corset, and has the additional value of keeping them together, if you do drop something -it's not a couple of bills or a lone credit cards- it's like unto a wallet, and more likely to come back to you intact.

It looks a bit like a small cigarette case (and I found it cheap at a junk jewlwery store):

A much simpler reticule design is to simple trace a circle several inches across (you could stiffen with pasteboard here as well), make a rectangle of the same fabric - length = circumference of circle, height = height of bag + 1". Sew rectangle short ends together, then to circular bottom; turn top of bag over to the inside and sew down, leaving an opening or adding buttonholes so that you can thread a closing/carrying cord or ribbon through.

I would seriously enjoy the thought of someone converting a bustle into storage space. First, there's the obvious "junk in the trunk" jokes, plus just the image of opening up a panel on the back of the skirt and pulling out a tire jack or something tickles me in ways that are probably improper. ^_^

Messenger bag for daily use. At events where I'm worried it'll get taken, I use the socks or corset method, wear a belt pouch, or use jacket pockets.

There's always period solutions, which include but are probably not limited to:

- a slit in the skirt, with tied-on pockets underneath
- a reticule
- some kind of haversack

I have to be honest with you, I'm a bit surprised at the question. Mainstream women's clothing doesn't tend to have enough pockets for that kind of stuff either.

Ditto!

I also can't imagine any possible way to obtain cards/keys(ouch!)/phone from my bra or a garter and still look dignified, either! Especially in a corset, when bending down to reach a sock or a garter would be restrictive. A bag seems like a much more sensible option to me. I like the idea of using a 'fanny pack' (I am English, and that expression will always amuse me XD) but to the side or around the back, though.

I just can't imagine how you'd stuff something as pointy as housekeys (I have 3 for my apartment) into something as tight as a corset. Doesn't that hurt? Or make you appear lumpy? I am astonished at how many of you tuck your belongings into your boobage.

I always carry a small handbag with dressy outfits and most of my pants have pockets. If I'm dancing, I wear an over-the-shoulder bag, usually I go with a small flat one, like a miniature map case. If I'm not dancing and for some reason don't want to be burdened with a handbag, I just carry a small change zippered pocket or change purse. Something small enough that I can conceal it in my hand.

The main problem is the keys and lip balm. Everything else I carry lays flat and could theoretically be tucked into a corset, if I wore one (which I don't.)

I've been tinkering around with creating some sort of leg holster for my pocket-knife - I mean, one that doesn't make me look like an assassin and can be hidden under clothes.

Leg holsters are full of win, but I've yet to design one I'm truly in love with.

The boobs however, are the plan. If you're wearing a corset with real boning, keys will not be able to poke out. Of course how much storage space you have also depends on your cup size. Frankly, I look at it this way: I want more utility out of my boobs then just confusing menfolk.

Two words: utility belt.

Even with a big skirt, you can usually make/modify enough longish dangly pockets to hang down the skirt that it doesn't look weird or Batman-like.

Or for the really fancy stuff, I have multiple little pouch purses, with long rope/strand type straps, that go about the waist. The straps get tucked up under the corset, and the pouches hang out from underneath, like little exterior pockets, or a fancy shmancy utility belt.

I use a small leather portmanteau, which holds everything and goes with my persona. It's actually a 19th century piece, though someone modified the bucles into latches. In fact, other people usually hand me their keys, cameras and wallets to carry. THEN I HAVE ALL THE POWER!! Depending on your character, a doctor's bag, carpet bag, etc, works for events, though maybe not so much for clubbing. And a haversack is also a miraculous invention, for those adventurous outtings.
